Let’s face it, moving into an eldercare facility, even a swanky assisted living facility, is a huge adjustment. As a friend or family member, it can be nice to offer a gift to the person who is making the change. Here are a few suggestions that might be most welcome to someone in an eldercare facility.
Flowers always make a room look more cheerful, as do plants. Consider giving the gift of a live, flowering plant or perhaps a cute little bonsai tree. When giving a plant, consider buying a lower maintenance option to make plant care as easy as possible. If you give flowers, consider bringing a fresh bouquet each week. Flowers with little scent typically are the best options, particularly if your loved one is sharing a room with another person.
A tablet can be a great option, as your loved one can use it to read books, watch movies and email friends and family. A tablet specifically designed for reading books, such as the Kindle or Nook, is easy to read in low and bright light and you can adjust the type size easily. While some people might be wary of learning to use the technology, most seniors are pretty tech-savvy these days and can learn quickly how to use the device. The best part about it is that it can store hundreds of books and periodicals and takes up almost no space. Plus, you can provide gift cards so that your loved one can buy even more.
Cozy, attractive pajamas or a fluffy robe and slippers can be a welcome gift, as well as comfortable clothes such as sweat suits. If your loved one has mobility issues, make sure the items are easy to take on and off and are not too long. You could also purchase a pretty quilt or blanket for someone bedridden most of the time in a nursing home.
Your time can be perhaps the most valuable gift you can give, so schedule some visits. Obviously, daily visits might not be possible, but frequent visits can be very welcome. Don’t forget to bring the grandchildren over, as well. If you aren’t sure what to do during the visit, bring some family photos or just ask them to tell you some of their stores. It’s a great opportunity to really get to know someone and learn about your family history.
