Understanding COPD

COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, includes two main conditions – Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis.

Emphysema means the airways and air sacs have lost their elastic quality, and the walls between many of the air sacs have been destroyed. Chronic bronchitis means the walls of the airways are swollen and the airways are producing too much mucus.

Treatments and lifestyle changes can slow down the progress of COPD and improve quality of life. Any lung irritants should be avoided, such as, smoking, chemical fumes and dust.  Individuals with COPD suffer from a variety of symptoms, including: chronic cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, tightness in their chest, frequent respiratory infections, weight loss, morning headaches, swollen feet or ankles, and fatigue. Because of these symptoms, COPD can make it very challenging for individuals to perform what used to be basic activities of daily living, such as, walking, cooking, and taking care of themselves.
